Tooled in China. Serviced, Engineered and Molded by J&L in Connecticut
The USB Accelerometer
Gulf Coast Data Concepts is introducing a USB Accelerometer to record movement in 3 axes (G forces) and saves the data to a
microSD card.
The product has several applications including the shipping industry. It helps shippers know how critical freight is handled
during transportation. The USB Accelerometer records and time-stamps continuous shock and motion data. The resulting
data reveals when freight was dropped, tilted, or moved.
Another application is in the medical industry of Actigraphy. Actigraphy is the monitoring of human motor activity, such as
exercise intensity or sleep disorders. The USB Accelerometer records the movement of a patient throughout the day, night,
or an entire week. Analysis of the data can quantify the amount of physical activity or exercise conducted by the patient.
This is especially important for verifying that certain patients exercise properly, like the elderly or physically disabled.
The USB Case
Gulf Coast Data Concepts (GCDC) selected J&L Plastic Molding to supply the USB Case for the USB Accelerometer. GCDC liked
the savings of tooling in China with the security of J&L taking responsibility for the logistics and tooling.

The USB Case is an assembly of the Case Top, Case Bottom and Case Cap. GCDC submitted a purchase order and supplied
J&L with the final CAD models to begin the tooling process.

Tooling Phase
J&L worked with our Tooling Partner in China to finalize the tool design. Final tool design files were submitted and approved
by J&L before tooling work started.
Tooling Samples were run in China and submitted to J&L. J&L submitted Tooling Samples to GCDC 8 weeks after the tooling
purchase order was submitted.

Original Tooling Samples from China
J&L Engineering
GCDC was pleased with the initial samples from our Tooling Partner. One issue was the fit of the Case Cap when placed
onto the assembled Case Top and Bottom. There were several tooling options available to resolve the “fit issue”.
To expedite the “fit issue” process, J&L released the tool from our Tooling Partner in China and air shipped the tool to J&L
in Connecticut. Once the tool arrived in Connecticut, J&L had the solution to the “fit issue” planned. J&L completed the
necessary toolwork in-house and ran samples to submit to GCDC. GCDC liked the new fit of the Cap and approved the
tooling for production.
J&L submitted the tooling samples with the “fit issue” resolved 2 weeks after the initial tooling samples were submitted.
Final Final Samples Submitted and Approved by GCDC
Color Match
GCDC required the color be a translucent blue. GCDC supplied J&L a color sample to match. J&L worked with a colorant
supplier then submitted a color sample to receive approval from GCDC.
